Ned Beaumont est un joueur professionnel. Il est aussi ami et conseiller de Paul Madvig politicien qui contrôle la ville. Ce dernier envisage de soutenir le sénateur Ralph Henry pour les prochaines élections d'autant plus qu'il est très amoureux de Janet la fille du sénateur. Mais voilà que Ned Beaumont trouve Taylor, fils du sénateur, assassiné dans China Street. Taylor Henry devait 1 200 dollars au bookmaker Bernie Desplain et ce dernier vient juste de disparaître alors qu'il doit 3 200 dollars à Ned Beaumont suite à un pari sur des courses de chevaux. Paul Madvig laisse dire que ce serait lui l'assassin de Taylor Henry et pourtant il est lui aussi en campagne électorale avec comme adversaire une belle fripouille, Shad O'Rory. Ned Beaumont va essayer de démêler cet imbroglio.
